JRN Racing Crew Chief Notes

July 2008

Welcome Race Fans,

It’s time for a racing update from Jamie & Randy Sample and Matt Bond.

So far, with six races completed, we have had a challenging year. With the success of our win during the opening Super Street race, we have had our share of good runs and struggles as well.

Jamie has had some success so far, but we continue to work his car to get it to handle better. We keep flip-flopping between cars that are way to loose (back end wants to come around), or it is too tight in the middle of the corner (front end wants to slide toward the wall). We have had our share of “issues” as well. We found after the second race that the rear end had a broken gear, and had to drop out of race 3 early due to a fuel cell leaking problem. All of these have been fixed, so time can be spent working making the car handle better through the turns. Jamie has finished 14th, 18th, 6th, 7th & 13th in the last 5 races and is currently 10th in points.

Randy has had better success on the track, qualifying well, and running in the top for the most part. However, he has not been immune to “issues” as well. During the 4th race, Randy was running 3rd, then blew up his motor. We were able to get another motor built before the next race. It has taken a couple of races to tune it in, but it seems to be running up to par now. Randy’s finishes so far this year have been 1st, 3rd, 5th, 15th, 10th, and 4th and is currently 5th in points.

Matt has been running this year in the U Car Class. He has had some top 10 runs, but has also had his share of struggles. During race 4, a race in which Matt had his best qualifying run starting 6th, Matt was taken out by another driver, and backed the car hard into the wall. Fortunately, the car was able to be repaired. The next run out, Matt had a pretty good run, but we need to keep dialing in the car. We decided to practice on a Thursday night before the last race, and during the practice, the car got real loose and got backed into the wall again. This time the hit was harder than before, and in the same place. He car has been repaired again, but will need continued tweaking t get it handling right again. Matt’s finishes so far his year have been 9th, 12th, 18th, 13th, and 23rd. and he is currently 16th in the points standing.

Race Results – JRN Racing takes on the 1st Super Street race with a win and eight place run.

Our first Super Street race of the season was this past Saturday. Jamie and Randy’s day started out great, with practice times at the front of the pack. The car’s were handling good and practice times were upfront. The rain got us mid afternoon and delayed racing for a couple of hours. This set-up for a 5 minute practice at which the race starting order was set from the order of the fastest practice times. Randy ended up started 2nd, and Jamie started 9th. Not sure what happened to Jamie, I think we were worrying to much about keeping distance between us and the other cars to have clean track, which slowed us down some. Anyway, the car was faster than the lap times indicated.

During the race, the cars & drivers drove well. Randy pursued the leader until lap 34, in which we was able to get under him and take the top spot. Randy battled for the lead until lap 47, when another caution came out. On the restart, Randy led the way and battled with the second place car the remaining way. On the final lap, the second place car tried to get under going into Turn 3, and through Turn 4. The two bumped some, but in the end, Randy came out on top! This was a great start to our season.

Jamie spent the entire race battling with middle of the pack cars. At one point, the car got away from him, and he looped it around. Although he was put to the back for causing the caution, he worked his way up through the field, and got stuck behind another couple of cars. Those cars raced each other hard, not giving any room for Jamie to get around them. On lap 47, those cars got together and spun each other out. Jamie, having no where to go, got caught in the mess. Some nose and fender damage was seen, but the car was able to keep on going to the end. Jamie ended up 8th.

Matt raced this past Saturday for the first U car race of the season. There was a huge field, with 30 cars qualifying. Matt, still feeling out the new car, qualified a very respectable 10th. Matt’s lap times were only .3 sec’s off the leaders, so you can see how close the competition is.

The race was a caution filled adventure. Matt fell back a couple of positions on the start, but had a good race clean race, although his spotter had him jump the start once during a restart. No harm, no foul, and kept going without notice. He was able to gain those positions back plus one. In the end, Matt finished a respectable 9th place. As Matt gains more experience driving the car, which is much faster than his old car, he will continue to climb his way to the top.

This year Nick, 13, (the N in JRN) has decided to hang up his helmet for the time being. His interest in Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, and Baseball will keep him going and involved in sports. Maybe in a year or two when he is a old enough, he will get behind the wheel of a Supertruck.
